World’s biggest offshore wind farm begins operations
June 4, 2019
Operations have officially commenced at the world’s largest offshore wind facility, off the coast of Yorkshire, England.
Upon full installation, and at full operation, expected by 2020, the facility will generate enough renewable energy to power over a million homes.
According to the wind farm’s developer Ørsted, the first operational team of 32 were ferried from Grimsby Royal Docks to the 1.2GW Hornsea One offshore wind farm, 120km out to sea.
They form part of two teams that will operate and maintain the wind farm, 24 hours per day, throughout the project’s 25 year lifespan.
Of the 174 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines commissioned for the site, more than 50 are operational, with installations expected to continue until the arrival of the UK’s winter weather.
David Coussens, Deputy Operations Manager for Hornsea One, who is leading the first operational team shift said: “Operating a wind farm this far offshore is unprecedented. We’ve had to think creatively and come up with new ways of working to overcome the logistical and technical challenges of operating a massive power station 120km from the shore, about the same distance as Grimsby to Leeds!”
The company made recent news when they announced the issuing of green bonds to raise capital for the Hornsea Two project, expected to claim the titles of world's largest from its sister site. Here's the story.
