EDAG Light Car - Cab.

Let there be light

EDAG presents its powerful innovation Light Car - Open Source at the 79th Geneva Motor Show

EDAG, worldwide provider of engineering services, will be presenting the world premiere of its vision of an environment-friendly, future-orientated vehicle for everyday and leisure use at this year's International Motor Show in Geneva.

For the body concept of the Light Car - Open Source, EDAG has broken new ground, and for the first time ever in automotive engineering, used ASA.TEC's innovative basalt fibre, a lightweight, stable and - above all - 100% recyclable material. Propulsion is taken care of by intelligent, electric drive systems in the wheels, which not only feature a high degree of efficiency to get the power of the lithium-ion batteries onto the road, but will also provide considerably greater creative scope for the vehicle package. In addition, with its innovative light concept, the "Light Car - Open Source" will be one of the first vehicles to utilise (O)LED technology as an individually adaptable design and communication element.

The commercial EDAG Light Car!

The future for commercial vehicles is light and electric

World premiere of the EDAG "EDpowerdrive" electric drive and presentation of the EDAG "LightCab" at the 63rd International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles (IAA) in Hannover.

At the 63rd IAA Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles, the EDAG Group will present its "EDpowerdrive" electric drive system - a concept that was specifically developed for urban distribution operations. With the modular electric drive, which can be retrofitted in addition to the existing drive unit, the EDAG Group demonstrates ways in which the sujet of electromobility can today be implemented in everyday applications. In the "LightCab" technology concept, the world's largest independent development company presents innovative solutions for lightweight construction concepts for commercial vehicles and offers new, efficient processes in the field of plant engineering and manufacturing.

EDAG "EDpowerdrive" – an efficient drive solution for urban distribution operations

EDpowerdrive - always the "right" drive system

EDpowerdrive is an electric drive for retrofitting to light commercial delivery vehicles. The modular system was specifically developed for use in urban distribution operations and for the first time facilitates a dual fuel vehicle drive system incorporating fossil fuels and electric power - the latter independent of the existing series production drive. The diesel engine featured in the carrier vehicle on display, which was left in its original condition, guarantees maximum efficiency on motorways and main roads. The newly developed modular electric drive by EDAG assumes responsibility for exhaust-free, low-noise applications in residential areas and urban traffic.

EDpowerdrive - the (efficient) power of two drives

The optimum efficiency of the drive is the result of the intelligent system design. The electric drive operates independently of the conventional front-wheel drive system. Now as before, in diesel operation the front axle continues to transfer power to the road. In electric drive mode, a battery pack built into the hold transmits the required energy to the rear axle via its own drive unit.

At the same time, the system’s compact design guarantees good remaining load capacity. In conjunction with the second stage ("second shift"), the system guarantees an energy capacity of 8 hours for the 2 stage operation and with a target range of up to 100 kilometres and attainable top speed of up to 65 mph in pure electric mode achieves a convincing range in urban use.

Another unique feature: the system realised in the carrier vehicle was designed as a retrofit kit that can be installed within two working days. The option to retrofit the system to the carrier vehicle in its standard series production condition remains available at all times. Thus, it becomes clear that "EDpowerdrive" does not pretend to be a hybrid drive in the conventional sense. In contrast to established systems, the driver of the vehicle has the ability to select the drive. A small switch on the instrument panel facilitates easy changeover to the desired drive at any time and thus guarantees the best possible optimisation of overall energy efficiency.

EDpowerdrive - the answer to the changing demands of distribution operations

The "EDpowerdrive" system offers a response to the changing requirements of modern distribution operations. Increasingly, distribution centres are located in decentralised, suburban locations - not least due to stricter noise regulations and increased space requirements. The resulting feeder and distribution traffic in inner cities and residential areas is contrary to modern thinking on traffic volume and the environment. Here, the system offers an energy efficient solution, even when used in medium-sized urban areas.

Internal calculations based on researched, application-specific case studies show CO2 savings of up to 70 percent per working day given targeted operation of the two drive systems. On the cost side too, there is impressive savings potential of approximately 50 percent per working day. And, last but not least: the low-noise drive also allows the vehicle to take on the additional task of distribution operations in inner cities and residential areas at night. With a view to future potential mass production of purely electric vehicles, Jörg Ohlsen (CEO & EDAG Group Executive Board spokesman) also emphasises "that "EDpowerdrive" incorporates a highly efficient bridging technology that could be used in small-series production even today."

EDAG "LightCab" – cost-efficient lightweight construction for the future of commercial vehicles

At the 63rd IAA in Frankfurt, with the innovative EDAG "Light Car" vehicle concept, the EDAG Group presented new technologies, materials and manufacturing processes on the sujet of "lightweight construction". Experience gained was used synergistically and transferred successfully to the commercial vehicle industry. The EDAG Group thus responded to growing demand for greater energy efficiency in the commercial vehicle industry while simultaneously increasing load capacity with new approaches to the manufacturing of commercial vehicle cabin components.

EDAG "Light Cab" - energy efficiency through cost-effective lightweight construction

With the "LightCab" technology concept, the company presents a cabin design for the commercial vehicle industry that, by concentrating on "lightweight construction" and "modularity", consistently focuses on innovations with a high probability of successful implementation. The resulting, particularly light material mix of partially hardened, high-strength steel sheets, thermoplastic composites and thin-walled cast steel was made possible for the first time through the use of proven, new and advanced technologies. Thus, for the first time ever in the commercial vehicle sector, provision was made for the combined application of thin-walled precision cast steel, laser-welded and partially hardened rolled profiles, as well as for the processing of continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastics. Combined with new joining techniques such as adhesive bonding, riveting, bolting and laser soldering, the proven strength and safety is guaranteed at the same time. This combination of lightweight construction and manufacturing processes allows partial weight savings of up to 25 percent.

EDAG "LightCab" - Cost-efficient lightweight construction through scaleable modularity

The "LightCab" modular structure concept provides for scaleability of cabin height, length and width by means of variable length profiles. This allows the parallel planning and realisation of an entire "cabin family". Due to the associated, significantly reduced investment in tooling, the technology concept has a noticeably positive effect on the time investment - and thus on the total investment too.

As a development specialist and generalist, the EDAG Group works constantly on developing potential new lightweight constructions and efficient solutions through the use of new materials, processing methods and drive technologies. The "EDpowerdrive" drive concept and the "LightCab" lightweight construction design offer application-specific approaches to solutions in the areas of electromobility and lightweight construction for the commercial vehicle industry. With this display of expertise at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2010, the EDAG Group emphasises its comprehensive know-how as a development partner for vehicles and production equipment, small-series production and plant engineering and construction.
